May 30, 1996

* A color guard led by Arvil Webster and Jim Bowman posted flags to open the annual Memorial Service. Speaker Leonard Lloyd emphasized how proud they were to think about those that they had served with, and “the ones that didn’t make it back. These memories are with us here today, they are not buried in a cemetery.” Lloyd mentioned each veteran present, and the situations they faced during active duty. “We survived because we had a deep-seated faith in our Creator,” Lloyd said.

* With a 18-2 win over Cherokee, the Lady Knights won the Smoky Mountain Conference softball championship. Coach Judy Nichols played all of her players in the game. Overall, the record for the season was 16-3. The team record for the conference games was 10-2. The Lady Knights faced Elkin in the first round of the playoffs, trouncing the Lady Elks 19-3.

May 30, 1985

* Firefighting personnel from the Cheoah Ranger District were called out to assist in an outbreak of forest fires in Florida.The locals were Jim Burchfield, Randy Shook, Lloyd Hedrick, Hugh Lane and Marshall McClung. Fires burned over 150,000 acres and destroyed and damaged 450 homes, as two firefighters were killed and several injured. No Graham County personnel were injured.

* Leslie Gregory, the daughter of David and Iris Gregory, was selected to attend the North Carolina Governor’s School in Winston-Salem. This was the oldest statewide residential program for gifted and talented, rising junior and senior high school students in the nation. Leslie was ranked the highest in the sophomore class at Robbinsville High School.

May 30, 1969

* Specialist 4 Larry Walls of Robbinsville was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroism with military operations while serving in Vietnam. He saved many lives by stepping up, disregarding his own safety and exposing himself to deadly enemy shelling, as he placed effective covering-fire on the hostiles. His valorous actions contributed to the success of the defeat of the mission.

* The Robbinsville Black Knights won the 1A championship of the Smoky Mountain Conference, with a 2-1 victory over Cherokee. Bob Manuel led the team with a .390 batting average. Ralph Crisp led the mound-duty, as he went 5-3. He had 56 strikeouts and a 0.48 ERA. The team finished the season with a 7-7 record. Update: The team has unfortunately not won a divisional title since.
