* Forward Pass Productions, Inc., had an open call for Native American men 18 years and older to appear in the major motion picture, The Last of the Mohicans. Some locals were already selected, and the search for more individuals involved Gloria Hancock from the casting department in Asheville to answer any questions, explain details about the movie, as well as the benefits for the men that were chosen. The film was set to begin production in mid-June.
* The junior varsity track team continued to improve after just two meets. Lisa Richards had placed fifth in those meets. The 400- and 800-meter relay teams – consisting of Celena Lane, Robin Blair, Tanya Millsaps and Waverly Glover – had placed in both events at each meet. For the boys, Eric Yates was undefeated in the long jump and placed second in the 200-meter dash. The 800-meter relay team of Tim Mehaffey, Rick Riddle, Billy Ditmore and Eric Yates had first and second-place showings.

* Hugh D. Allen of Robbinsville was awarded a James M. Johnston Scholarship for undergraduate study at North Carolina State University. A senior at Robbinsville High School, he was a member of the Beta Club, the student council and the Science Club. He also won the Electronics and Algebra II medal. Amounts of Johnston Awards varied according to need and ranged from $500-$4,200.
* At Fontana Village, the square dance season had begun. The resort had laid claim to being the “World’s Square Dance Capital.” This year marked the 44th time the event was held. Reservations of 800 dancers from throughout the United States had been received.
May 9, 1969
* Mr. and Mrs. Tillman Stewart received a letter from their son, Sgt. Larry Buster Stewart, explaining that he was wounded while participating in action against enemy forces on the Laotian border, and that he was hit with a bullet – but only skin deep. His left ear had also been injured from a concussion from a blast and a hand grenade had also been thrown into the fox-hole where he was. Stewart had been cited prior for his bravery.
* The Tripletts were off to a fast start in the Graham County Softball League, as a result of three, lopsided wins over the opposition. The team opened with an 18-3 win over the Blue Edge Boars and followed up by trouncing Elmo’s Billiards 30-7 and 13-5 in the second game. Bob Manuel led the first game against Elmo’s with five hits including a home run. Gary Lynn and Bobby Brooks had home runs to lead the first game attack for Elmo’s, while Ralph Crisp had three hits to lead in the second game.
