Oct. 9, 1997

* Plans to construct a new Graham County Schools bus garage were in motion. Superintendent Donald Andrews said the location of the existing structure could house a new, five-bay garage, with the $230,000 project to be split by a collaboration between the school district ($138,000); the county ($46,000) and Tri-County Community College ($46,000). 

* Graham County's efforts to raise money for Relay for Life were recognized at the American Cancer Society's North Carolina Relay for Life Awards Banquet in Hickory. Locally, over $22,000 was raised. Pictured receiving awards at the banquet were Sandy Bowers, Marlene Orr, Charlotte Mintz, Jimmie Holder, Teresa Garland, Ruth Porter, Carol Roundtree, Melba Millsaps, Mary Queen, Johnnie Brooms, Loretta Phillips, Donald Andrews and Christy Shuler.

Oct. 9, 1986

* The Graham County Board of Commissioners purchased a front-end tractor, which would be utilized at the local landfill. Inspected by board chairman Roy Brooms, the used Kamatsu D-5 was purchased from the Tennessee Valley Authority for $31,000, with the county noting that the quote included the cost of repairing the torque converter. 

* Graham County Sheriff A.J. Peterson, deputy Donald Johnson and U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer Russ Arthur were shown burning 200 marijuana plants on the front page of The Star. The marijuana had an estimated street value of $80,000.

Oct. 9, 1980

* Walt Hyde was approved as the new Stecoah School Assistant Principal by the Graham County Board of Education. Others items passed during the board's meeting included a policy stating that any student wishing to attend Tri-County Technical College must either be 18, married or a high-school graduate; and a $500 reward was offered for the arrest and conviction of anyone selling drugs or alcohol on school property.

* American Legion Post 192 Commander Curtis Griggs distributed "Get Out and Vote" buttons to Junior Girl Scouts Troop 132 members Patricia Millsaps, Tracy Adams, Holly Willmore, Lorae Carver, Jennifer Parish and Jenny Barlow. The troop's field executive was Barbara Rapoza and the leader was Vicki Cheek.
