* Six exchange students were spending the 1986-87 school year in Graham County. Christian Pagel and Michael Philipp resided in Germany, while Christine Pielken was a resident of Switzerland. Itsasne Onatibia hailed from Bosque, Spain, while Par Englund was from Sweden and Anette Mikkelsen came from Denmark.
* The Robbinsville High School Homecoming Court was revealed. Senior representatives were Melanie Hooper, Shawndee Irons, Melanie McKeldrey, Monica Shuler and Christy McMonigle. Juniors were Diane Adams, Lorae Carver and Jackie Stiles, while the sophomore
class was represented by Kelly Phillips and Amy Millsaps. Kim Adams was the freshman representative.
Sept. 11, 1980
* The Graham County Board of Commissioners delivered Blue Ridge, Ga.-based Tri-City Cable TV Company, Inc., a letter of intent to bring services to the area. A 17-foot receiving dish was set to be placed atop Joanna Bald, which would serve a 15-mile radius. Customers would be able to sign up for a basic cable package that included 11 channels for $8 a month; HBO could be added for an extra $9.95 per month.
* A clean-up was held on Fontana Lake. Conducted by the Boy Scouts of America Troop 72 from Skyland, the effort netted over 75 bags of refuse, plus tires, metal and other items.
Sept. 11, 1970
* Robbinsville’s Larry Gladden was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Graham County Superior Court. Gladden was sentenced to 10-15 years in prison for the slaying of an unidentified Tennessee man.
* Fourteen U.S. Forest Service employees and a member of the N.C. Forest Service returned home after spending over two weeks fighting wildfires in Washington, Montana and Idaho. Locals dispatched to help combat the forest fires were Charles Aulds, Jack Coleman, Jimmy Lovin, Ivan Carpenter, Marshall McClung, Jim Burchfield, Geter Burchfield, Arnold Tipton, G.D. Phillips, Tim Roberts, Gudger Jenkins, Hugh Gibbs, Randy Shook, Ted Myers and John McKeldry.
