Sept. 12, 2013

* Dean Davis, 84 of Almond, was killed while riding his bike on North Carolina Highway 28. Davis was struck by Terry Crisp Nelms of Robbinsville. Charges against Nelms were pending until further investigation was complete. Over the same weekend, the N.C. State Highway Patrol reported Roger Hanebrink, 63 of Georgia, lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree. Hanebrink died at the scene, with the cause of the wreck including driving “too fast for road conditions” and crossing the centerline.

* The JV Black Knights defeated Rosman, 30-0. Tank Rattler started the Knights run with a 60-yard kickoff return. Rosman tried to retaliate with its first possession, but was stopped by Reece Adams.

Sept. 12, 2002

* Graham County Sheriff Steve Odom doubled the vote count of challenger Keith Eller in early returns from Stecoah and absentee totals. Eller was victorious only in the West Ward, leaving Odom with a 219-vote victory. Odom was set to face longtime state trooper Bob DeBruhl, in November.

* Robbinsville enjoyed a 35-6 victory over the Walhalla (S.C.) Razorbacks. Ty Gibbs started the action off by snagging a 61-yard touchdown pass from Dusty Anderson. Gibbs continued to make his presence felt throughout the night by catching five passes for 201 yards and scoring another touchdown. Dusty Williams also had a touchdown in the first half.

Sept. 12, 1991

* Gary Shope of Robbinsville was arrested by Graham County Sheriff Melvin Howell and deputy Barry Saunooke, and charged with the murder of Lillian “Blondie” Turpin Porter. Porter’s body was discovered at a campsite by Jerry Sanford, badly beaten and reportedly dying from traumatic head injuries.

* The Black Knights traveled to Burnsville and defeated Mountain Heritage, 35-7. Travis McCracken opened the scoring for the Knights with a two-yard plunge into the end zone in the second quarter. McCraken led all rushers with 23 carries for 181 yards.
