* While on a 100-county campaign, Democratic Senate candidate Terry Sanford greeted a crowd of 60 attendees at the local courthouse. Sanford stressed party unity as part of his speech, while also being photographed with his youngest Graham County supporter: Emmy Stewart, the daughter of Jan and Steve Stewart.
* County personnel from both the N.C. and U.S. Forest services were dispatched to Oregon and Idaho, in order to help combat a series of wildfires. Virginia Gibbs, Lloyd Hedrick, Harry Thomas, Marshall McClung and Allen DeHart were each assigned to blazes near Granite and Dale, Ore., while Randy Shook, Dale Holder, Hugh Gibbs and Harold Jenkins were dispatched to McCall, Idaho and Baker, Ore. Donnie Richardson was also given a role as a division group supervisor in Boise, Idaho.

* A local youth was listed in good condition at Swain County Community Hospital in Bryson City, after being accidentally shot with a .410 shotgun. Eddie Bowers was playing alongside Virgil Turpin at a Tallulah residence when the weapon accidentally discharged and injured Bowers, said Graham County Sheriff Fred Anderson.
* Members of the Graham County Board of Commissioners attended Ann Edwards' local government class, to answers questions from students. Pictured were board chair Eugene McMonigle and board members Thomas (Ray) Carver; Raymond Williams; and County Manager Derrell Crisp.

* The Robbinsville Young Democratic Club was formed, aimed at encouraging young adults to "learn and live the principles of the Democratic Party." The inaugural officers were President Judy Long; Vice President Gary Davis; Secretary/Treasurer Joyce Pangle and Reporter Linda Beavers.
* Graham County corn crops were hit by a widespread Southern leaf blight, which was attributed to a new race of the Helinnthosporium Maydis fungus. Local corn losses were estimated to be 20-25%.
