* A dinner to honor Robbinsville football coach Bob Colvin was scheduled to be held at Thunderbird Mountain Resort. Tickets were $10 and "limited," according to The Star. Update: Colvin had just retired, after leading the Black Knights to 11 state championships (1969, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1977 and five straight, from 1979-83). He was also an assistant on the 1965 team that was just recognized as state champions by the Graham County Board of Education in 2024.

* Robbinsville's track & field team was having a fine season, with several school records falling as a result of the success. Sam Crisp recorded a discus throw of 134 feet, eight inches, breaking the previous mark set by Andy Jordan (127' 6"). The 880-relay team of Kevin Waldroup, Darrell Simmons, Bobby McGuire and Terry Adams combined to finish the event in 1:39.40, besting the former mark of 1:42.00. Phillip Buchanan also broke his own record in the 120-meter hurdles, with a time of 16.10. Update: The discus record was just broken again Saturday. Details on page 10A.

* A Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling card was scheduled to take place April 26, 1980, at Swain County High School. The winner of an 11-man battle royal was set to receive $4,800. The event was sponsored by the Bryson City Jaycees and was set to include five matches, including future Hall of Famers Ox Baker, Ricky Steamboat, Ray Stevens and Greg Valentine. Update: The wrestling fan recapping this day in history is envious that he was unable to attend this card, due to not living in Graham County at the time – and also, he was over eight years away from being born.

* An ad touted the opening of the Santeetlah Golf Course on May 1. Green fees were just $2. Update: The location later closed and to this day, the county does not have a golf course.
