* Robbinsville was on cloud nine after capturing its first state championship. The Black Knights capped an 11-2 campaign by defeating the Manteo Redskins 14-8 under the Big Oaks. Manteo (11-2) scored on the first drive of the game, but Dale Walsh took a pitch seven yards to get the Knights on the board. Ronnie Waldroup ran in the game-tying conversion. Waldroup then punched in the title-clinching touchdown in the fourth, scoring on another 7-yard carry. "It was a team effort," said Robbinsville head coach Bob Colvin. "We just never gave up."

* Robbinsville and Stecoah’s Mites and Midgets were set to tip off the youth basketball season in a 3-game set. Judy Nichols was the head coach for Robbinsville’s girls; Tom Radford was in charge of the Midgets; and the Mites were supervised by Opal Long and Devonne McIntosh. The Robbinsville Recreation Association was sponsoring the Knights. Admission to the games were just 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children.
