* The Black Knights track & field team won the Smoky Mountain Conference title meet, tallying 92 points. Among the highlights were Ricky Stiles winning the long jump, 100-meter dash and hurdles; and Sam Crisp prevailing in both the shot put and discus throw.
* Steve McMonigle received the 1980 Drake Memorial Award at the WNC Sports Awards Banquet in Asheville. Steve's win continued a family tradition, as his uncle Gary won the same trophy in 1967.
May 8, 1970
* Marty Maxwell was recognized for sinking a hole-in-one at Santeetlah Golf & Country Club. Maxwell's feat came on Hole No. 1. Maxwell was on a run of good luck, as he also recorded a hole-in-one at Fontana Golf Course in March of the same year.
* Robbinsville split four baseball games, falling to Swain County 7-0 and Sylva-Webster 13-5; but knocking off Andrews 5-4 and Cherokee 6-5. Of note, Mark Manuel surrendered just one hit in the victory over the Braves.
