There's an escape: conclusion of a series

Over the past couple of weeks, I described my ill-advised tendency to intervene when a man hurts a woman. Sometimes, I chase the perpetrator down the street.  Sometimes, I just scream at him.  But do I really believe this might fix anything?

Name your blessings, one by one

“In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).  Have you ever tried thanking God, even in difficult times? Or should you only thank Him when everything else is fine?

Should military justice be different than civilian?

Military justice is different than civilian justice, and it should be.  Fighting a conventional war like Vietnam or World War II is governed by the Geneva Conventions and Protocols, which are 70 years old and basically designed to overlay the act of war with a degree of humanity.

Regaining the lost message of Thanksgiving

When 102 brave Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620, these intrepid travelers had no idea of the hardships they would face.  By the end of the first winter, only 51 survived.

The third way: second in a series

When I was young and a group of guys hollered rude comments at me and my friends, we reacted in three different ways: flight, freeze, or fight.

Beauty of God's love, faithfulness

“Praise ye the Lord! O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever” (Psalms 106:1). There was a certain man who had two sons. The younger son demanded for his inheritance and wanted to be separated from his family.

Accusations can taint a good name

Too bad Richard Jewell is not around to enjoy all the positive publicity he’s getting these days. He certainly endured enough of the bad kind when he was living.

What in the world is a meme?

My wife and I traveled to Columbus, Ohio recently to visit our daughter Abby and her family, and to attend an Ohio State football game.  After three quarters of 30-degree windy weather and a 40-point lead over Maryland, we decided enough was enough and headed home.

Do it, anyway: first in a series

I heard them from two blocks away. A man screaming. A woman crying.  She was so much smaller than he was, that at first I did not even see her.  He had her pushed up against a brick wall, pinned there with a bicycle as he bellowed in her face and she squirmed and cried.

Obadiah, here and there

Mention the word Obadiah and Bible scholars will likely think of the shortest book in the Old Testament bearing that name.   The book of Obadiah was thought to have been written around 586-587 B.C. and prophesied the destruction of the Edomites, who were descended through Esau.
