Hoxit wins sheriff race

Robbinsville – Retired state trooper Brad Hoxit easily defeated former sheriff Russell Moody for Graham County Sheriff in Tuesday’s general election, getting just over two-thirds of votes cast in the race.

Robbinsville – In 2018, Mark Robinson spoke at a Greensboro City Council meeting: just an average citizen, a church-goer and Army veteran, defending gun rights. A video of him went viral. Later that year, he was invited to speak at the National Rifle Association’s annual convention.

Fall fire season sparked by several outbreaks

Lucille Jenkins Phillips, 76 of Robbinsville, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022, at Graham Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center. She was the daughter of the late Alvin and Dolly Burchfield Jenkins.

Matthew Stan Miller

Matthew Stan Miller, 40 of the Beech Creek community of Robbinsville, N.C., passed away, Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022, in a house fire, after saving his mother and niece while attempting to rescue their beloved dog Scrappy. He was a native of Dekalb County, Ga.

Jackie Slaughter

Jackie Slaughter, 59 of Robbinsville, N.C., passed away Friday, Oct. 21, 2022, at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. He was a native of Graham County, and the son of the late Billy and Bennie Sue Millsaps Slaughter.

Nancy S. Meeker

Nancy S. Meeker, 79 of Alpharetta, Ga., passed away on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022. Nancy was born on Feb. 8, 1943 in Chicago, Ill., and grew up in Chicago and Glenview, Ill., where she graduated from New Trier High School.

Marvin K. Jones, Sr.

Marvin Kenneth Jones, Sr., passed away, Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022. Though his passing was sudden and unexpected, it was extremely peaceful. He was the beloved husband of Helen Plemmons Jones Thompson; father of Marvin Kenneth Jones, Jr.

Graham County wins big at fair

Fletcher – The 2022 installment of the N.C. Mountain State Fair was kind to both individuals and organizations from Graham County. The annual showcase was held at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center in Fletcher (an Asheville suburb) from Sept. 9-18.
