* The N.C. State Employees’ Credit Union held a ground-breaking ceremony in preparation of a new facility, under construction on Tallulah Road. “We are excited about this new location for Robbinsville,” said Donnie Stiles, Vice President and city executive of the Robbinsville Credit Union. This non-profit, financial co-operation was owned by its members, which served more than 1.6 million members in North Carolina at the time.

* A cool shower put a damper on the Knights’ home track meet for fans, but didn’t seem to slow down either Knight team. The boys took a 151.5 point win and broke a school record that was set in 1981. The Lady Knights also took first place, with 115 points.

* People parked at Stecoah Gap waited to see what was described as a “fuzzy star,” located below the Big Dipper. Stargazers assembled there and felt rewarded for making the trip. Comet Hyakutake – named after the astronomer who first saw the comet – appeared over Graham County, shining brightly. Its appearance and discovery, per Newsweek magazine, took the entire scientific community by surprise. “An event like this, and the unexpected appearance of the comet, was a reminder that the hand of God still turns the Universe,” said Doug Looper.

* The Lady Knights hit the diamond immediately with two up and two down. In the first doubleheader of the season, the Lady Knights won 12-3 and 17-4 over Highlands. Leading hitters for Robbinsville in the first game were Pam Beasley, who went 2-3, with a double and a triple; Jessica Yates, who was 2-3; Crystal Morgan, 2-3 and Krissy Williams, who was 2-3 with a home run.
