* Janene Hardy joined the staff at The Graham Star as an advertising representative. She had lived in Graham County for 18 years and had worked at Fontana Village, where she shuttled groups across Fontana Lake as a certified U.S. Coast Guard captain. She also worked at Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center.
* The Black Knights opened the week after spring break by going to Blue Ridge to play the Bobcats. After a rough start for Robbinsville, they went into the final inning with the game tied, 4-4. Sophomore Chaz Whaley then made his way to third base, as sophomore Ethan Ramsey hit a double to drive in the winning run. Freshman Jesse Franks went to the mound in the bottom half of the seventh to save the game and struck out the final batter.

* Three new signs – paid for by part-time residents, Charles and Pat Williams – welcomed visitors to Robbinsville in style. The sign project took almost a year since the Williamses’ first wrote the Chamber, suggesting a “design-the-sign” contest. Allen Garver of the Chamber of Commerce coordinated the project, seeing it through from design selection to sign installation. Lee Castro created the final design, and Mayor Bobby Cagle, Jr. – as well as the Town of Robbinsville – provided encouragement and support throughout the project.
* As the Graham County Rescue Squad began to hold its annual fundraising Ramp Festival, Rescue Squad members headed for the hills to harvest the ramps. These unique, potent herbs have the unpleasant side-effect of lingering odors on your body after consuming them.

* State Highway Patrolman David Gladden reported that three wrecks had occurred in the county over this weekend. The first accident he was called to involved a 1961 Ford, operated by Roger Anderson, which had collided with a 1964 Ford driven by Muriel Buchanan. Anderson was charged with following too close. Secondly, Gladden was called to the Snowbird area where a 1971 Ford operated by Keith Crisp, Jr., had rear-ended a 1971 Buick, driven by Lake Kimsey of Tennessee. Damages were about $1,000. The final accident involved a 1967 Volkswagen, operated by Jack Phillip’s wife Penny and Brenda Satterfield, who were both injured. They were admitted into District Memorial Hospital in Andrews.
* Ronny Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Smith of Robbinsville was the winner of the four year WBT-WBTV-WBT-FM-WWBT Scholarship. The scholarship was awarded annually to a high school senior who planned to enter the broadcasting profession and major in this field at the University of North Carolina. The N.C. Department of Pubic Instruction selected him for the Student Task Force, a group of students from across the state who worked with the department to improve public education in North Carolina.
