The Graham Star’s editor, Stella Sawyer, was cooking supper while one of her poodles was racing about the kitchen. She caught it and as she went to put the dog out, another poodle raced through an opening, causing her to fall. Her left arm was broken in four places. Assistance from Connie Hill, Dave Grim and a temporary splint allowed her to move into St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville to undergo surgery and get the Aug. 14, 1970 edition to press.
