* Customers that were accustomed to using the bill-pay at the Verizon Wireless store had to travel elsewhere. Verizon had served Graham County for 12 years. “We aren’t getting enough new customers, and I don’t think they realize that purchasing phones and supplies through this store is what keeps it open,” said employee Donna Orr. “Going to the out of town stores and online purchases hurt us as an outlet.”
* The Black Knights wrestling team advanced their Smoky Mountain Conference winning streak to eight straight years with a 45-30 win over Cherokee, and picked up their seventh tournament title. The Cherokee Braves quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Spencer McCoy picked up a major decision at 220 pounds to put Robbinsville in the lead, 10-6. Josh Davis voted Smoky Mountain Conference Wrestler of the year.

* Jim Hunt presented awards to The Graham Star’s editor Kate Henry, for the N.C. Press Association. Henry and the Star received six awards, placing first in sport news, editorial writing and photo page; second in investigative reporting and feature photo; and the Star’s entire staff placed third for the use of seven photos. “Our readers and advertisers are worth the best we can give them,” Henry said.
* The Junior Varsity girls’ basketball team had a good season. After playing the Murphy Bulldogs, they came out victorious once again, 40-31. Kala Matheson led the team with 23 points; nine rebounds, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot. Robbinsville added another win by defeating Rosman a few days later, 49-40.
