* Graham County Sheriff Russell Moody has expanded his workforce program by using imates to raise food for the needy. Pictured is Alvin Watkins, Mitchell Crisp, Jesse Jenkins and Daniel Grant. The harvest will go to local churches and food pantries in the fall.
* U.S. Forest Service Fishing Derby is big hit. 70 people participated in the event. The derby started in 1989 as a way to encourage young people to get interested in the outdoors.

* Dale Laughter, with the local office of the N.C. Department of Transportation, said the recent slide repairs on U.S. Highway 129 South, near Topton and N.C. Highway 143 near Stecoah Gap. The cost would be $1.5 million.
* Anglers from the Mountain Lakes Bass Club competed in the Top Ten Classic. Greg Burchfield won the competition, weighing in with 14.29 lbs.
