* A 4-1 commission vote designated an uptown building as the temporary headquarters of Sheriff Russell Moody. The vote fired up the crowd at the meeting. Graham County Commission Chairwoman Sandra Smith threatened to call the sheriff’s office and have local residents arrested if they didn’t quiet down during a meeting at the community center. “We will not accept public comments,” she said. “The public has no say whatsoever with what we do about county buildings. We will not hear public comments, period.”
* The athletic banquet honors students and coaches for an outstanding year. Smoky Mountain Coaches of the Year are Dee Walsh, Warren Knott, Todd Odom, Ronny Carringer and Rance Shuler. Judy Nichols received a standing ovation for her many years of coaching. Tracey Trammell and Kurt Odom were awarded the school’s Most Valuable Athlete awards. Jordan Orr received the Most Outstanding Field award.

* The Family Fun Center announces the release date for the video release of the movie Nell is July 11. The pre-order price is $70.06.
* The softball season ends for the Lady Knights, after losing to Northwest Ashe in the second round of the state playoffs, 11-2. Robbinsville ended its season with a record of 17-4.

* The Honor Guard at Sweetgum Baptist Church’s memorial services consisted of four young Vietnam veterans. Pictured are Gary Carpenter, Olen Long, Cecil Rogers and Lamar Crisp. The honorable Leonard Lloyd spoke on the need to install patriotism in the young, so that the lives of those who have fought and died for our country’s freedom won’t be in vain.
* Allan Lakey – a 5-foot-8 guard, who was instrumental in leading the Robbinsville Black Knights to a 22-4 record – was signed to a grant-in by Winston-Salem Business School in Winston-Salem.
* Five Points Cafe had a 21-piece chicken barrel for $4.59, with french fries and rolls. Barrels could be delivered within city limits, free of charge.
