* Robbinsville’s Mayor Pro Tem Bobby Smith and Pam Hysong – along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture – recently signed off on the final portion of the $6 million in grants for the new wastewater treatment plant on Sandhole Road. Town officials were expected to let the project out for bid within weeks.
* The Robbinsville Black Knights baseball team came in young and unproven, but were still excited to get underway. The only one returning starter from last years team, Cassidy Galaviz, was the only senior on the ball club. Junior Brandon Beavers was the ace on the mound. The pitching rotation included sophomore Cain Ammons and freshman Jesse Franks.

* Marshall McClung of Robbinsville was one of 27 U.S. Forest Service employees to accumulate 6,027 miles of running or walking to “Walk Around the Region.” The program was a physical fitness incentive sponsored by the forest service. Most of the miles that McClung accumulated were “running” miles. He used the runs to practice for road races, in which he competed. District Ranger Glenn McConnell presented McClung with a plaque in recognition of his feat, which was accomplished between 1992 and 1996. Marshall was also chosen to carry the Olympic torch for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Ga.
* The Robbinsville Lady Knights played a great game against the Swain Lady Maroon Devils, but came out with a difficult loss of 54-52. Krissy Williams had an outstanding game, scoring 19 points, seven rebounds, two assists, three steals and shot 100 percent from the free-throw line. Bethany Teem also had a great game, scoring nine points and 13 rebounds, with three assists and two steals.

* The hull of the basement was all that remained of the residence at the Crow’s Nest Boat Dock on Fontana Lake. Fire completely destroyed the building. The Crow’s Nest was owned by Mr. and Mrs. John Oros. No one was at home when the fire broke out, but it was not discovered until much later.
