10 years ago

* Graham County School Superintendent Chip Carringer and payroll director Teresa Forde were treated to a retirement party by the schools. Ford’s retirement came after 27 years in the administration office, while Carringer’s came after 34 years in the school system and five years as superintendent.

* Three injured workers sustained second and third-degree burns by flames caused by flash fire. Ben Woodson, Scott Mason and Clint Depriest were removing propane from a residential tank on Sweetwater Road when the fire erupted. The three had been released from the burn center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.           

* The Lady Knights’ track team put themselves in the winners circle as regional champions for the first time in school history. They finished with a team score of 107.50. Several girls moved on to compete in the state finals at the Greensboro Aggie Stadium.

25 years ago

* The Graham County’s Sheriff’s race narrowed down to two delegates. Marshall McClung and Steve Odom won their respective races for sheriff and will face each other in November. Almost half of the county’s 5,757 registered voters, 2,802 (48.67 percent) cast votes in the May primary election.

50 years ago

* The Graham County Railroad started its climb back to an active life, as offices for the new railroad were set up in the Bear Creek Station building. The track repair work was scheduled to start May 21. Expected are two truck loads of modern maintenance equipment, used to improve both speed and quality. The first construction work was to be on the section from Bear Creek to Topton.
