* A 56-year-old Louisiana woman died when the motorcycle that she was riding overturned and slid into a ditch. Charlotte Ritchie of Lake Charles, La. died from her injuries at UT Medical Center in Tennessee, on June 8. Her death was the third Graham County motorcycle fatality of the year.
* The Black Knights scrimmaged Nantahala, giving basketball coach Adam Brooks an opportunity to see his upcoming varsity team in action. The loss of five graduating seniors left big shoes to fill.

* Wayne and Rena Phillips celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The couple had decided to get married the next time it rained and on June 17, 1935, the skies opened and Wayne remarked, āI knew it was coming down to it and I had better get cleaned up.ā They were married at the Rev. Alfred Adamsā home on Ground Squirrel Branch.
* NASCAR late-model stock car driver Kerry Earnhardt was announced for the second annual Rodney Orr Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser at Robbinsville High School. The first effort raised $7,000.

* Eugene Moody, 33, drowned after a boating accident on Santeetlah. He was a resident of Graham County and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
* Three top athletes of the 1970 Senior Class attended a conference for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Clemson University. William Collins, Lowell Snider and Mark Manuel had represented Black Knights Athletics team for 2-3 years and lettered in football, baseball and track.
