This Day in Star History: April 18, 2024

April 18, 1991 * Three hikers from the “Happy Hikers Club” were injured by a fallen tree and were rescued from the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock portion of the wilderness. The injured hikers were transported to boats, then ambulances for transport to the University of Tennessee Hospital.

This Day in Star History: April 11, 2024

April 11, 1985 * Robbinsville forest personnel traveled to help fight forest fires, flying crews into Asheville Airport and transporting them to area fires. Fire crews went as far as New Mexico and fought fires, which destroyed many homes and businesses.

April 4, 2002 * As most people prepared for Easter weekend, firefighters were called out to control brush fires. A fire in the Long Hungry Branch area was only the beginning, as the firefighters were also called out to West Buffalo.

March 28, 2002 * During Easter season, thoughts are turned toward a cross. John and Ginny Brand of Robbinsville were raising four miniature donkeys, marked with a cross on their back.

This Day in Star History: March 21, 2024

March 21, 2002 * Robbinsville resident Paul Hall was arrested and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and indecent liberties with a child. Deputies recovered over 60 pills in Hall’s residence, used to incapacitate two girls. Hall was released on a $47,000 bond.

This Day in Star History: March 14, 2024

March 14, 2019 * Superior Court Judge William Coward seemed unmoved to a plea, to reduce bond for a man charged with statutory rape of a 14 year-old girl. Casey Adam Haney, 37, remained in jail with a bond of $300,000.

March 7, 2002 * After months of medical treatment and intensive therapy, Frank Findley finally returned home from the Atlanta-based Shepherd Center. A motorcycle accident put him in the hospital for five months, after crashing into a dump truck.

This Day in Star History: Feb. 29, 2024

Feb. 29, 1996 * Marshall McClung, along with 38 other local “Community Hero’s,” including Sidney Wilkey – a Robbinsville native – were awarded the honor of carrying the Olympic flame through Western North Carolina, on its way to the 1996 Olympics.

Feb. 22, 2007 * Graham County native Donna Burchfield was hit with a counterfeit-check scam. Being a criminal justice student, Burchfield immediately searched the internet for confirmation when she received her check in the mail.

This Day in Star History: Feb. 15, 2024

Feb. 15, 2001 * The vacancy on the Robbinsville Town Council was filled by Johnny Williams. The seat was vacated by Steve Hooper, who moved out of city limits. * Robbinsville wrestling’s “Senior Knight” proved very successful for the seniors. The Murphy Bulldogs fell victim to the Knights, 76-6.
