Aug. 29, 2013 * There was a time that Robbinsville’s wastewater treatment plant was considered, “the nastiest place in Graham County.” An 18-foot-tall, 300,000-gallon tank was also called the “Green Monster.

This Day in Star History: Aug. 22, 2024

Aug. 22, 1991 * Edward Earl Davis III, 32 and Roger D. Hood, 18 – both from Ohio – were reported by police to be armed and “extremely dangerous.” The two men were wanted in connection with the slaying of an Asheville pawn shop employee.

This Day in Star History: Aug. 15, 2024

Aug. 15, 2013 * Dr. Patricia Johnson was recognized by Mission Medical Associates as being in the top 10 percent in the nation for patient approval. Only 17 positions out of 700 received the award, which placed Johnson in an elite field of professionals.

This Day in Star History: Aug. 8, 2024

Aug. 8, 1991 * Two separate motor vehicle accidents occurred on the same day off Big Santeetlah Road. A Ford Ranger pickup operated by James S. Millsaps of Robbinsville pulled off the main road, only to lose his vehicle down a 500-foot bank on Bob Creek Hill.

This Day in History: July 25, 2024

July 25, 1991 * Graham County’s first official windmill was built on the property of Con Gladden in the East Buffalo community. Gladden said the windmill – which stood 26 feet tall – was powerful enough to power his entire home.

This Day in Star History: July 18, 2024

July 18, 1996 * Graham County deputies surrounded the Santeetlah Lake campsite of murder suspect Kelly Samples, 25 and traveling companion Regionald Nabors. After Samples and Nabors were arrested, Samples told deputies where he had put the gun.

This Day in Star History: July 11, 2024

July 11, 2013 * Visitors flocked to Fontana Dam to observe the water discharge, which was in excess of 17,000 cubic feet per second. Recent rains had Tennessee Valley Authority officials releasing water from all generators, and the result was a spectacular water flow.

July 4, 2013 * The annual heritage festival was ready for residents and visitors. The event kicked off with a visit from stars of “The Moonshiners.” The popular cast enjoyed pictures taken with the visitors.

This Day in Star History: June 27, 2024

June 27, 2002 * A motorcycle crash on the Cherohala Skyway resulted in the death of William Sanders from Caswell Beach. Sanders lost control of his motorcycle in a sharp curve near mile marker 10, struck the guardrail and was thrown 50 feet into brush below the road.
