10 years ago * The 103rd anniversary of the Junaluska Wreath Laying Ceremony was held at the Junaluska Museum. Known as a warrior and Cherokee leader, Junaluska walked back to his beloved mountains after being removed from the Trail of Tears.

10 years ago * About ⅓ of Robbinsville’s registered voters turned out to the polls and re-elected the town’s three incumbent aldermen. They also cleared the way for an unopposed mayoral elected candidate, Steve Hooper. “It will be a pleasure working with the board that’s been there,” Hooper said.

10 years ago * Robbinsville cut the ribbon on the town’s $7.4 million wastewater treatment plant, which is expected to serve residential and commercial development in the town and county for years to come. The plant had a capacity to treat 630,000 gallons a day, but was expandable to 850,000 a day.

10 years ago * Robbinsville High School ranked first in the state for graduation rates and second for use of corporal punishment, although a child advocacy group claims “the punishment hinders academic performance.” School officials used the paddle 31 times last year – second in the state.

10 years ago * Two brothers were killed when a car careened around a curve on U.S. 129, north of Robbinsville. Augustine Nwaeayi of Atlanta lost control of his 2004 Honda and slid into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane.

10 years ago * AAA once again named Graham County as the most dangerous county in the state for motorcycle accidents, topping the list for most collisions, injuries and fatal crashes of motorcycles in the past three years.
