10 years ago * After serving as assistant superintendent for the past five years, Angie Knight was selected as Graham County Schools’ next superintendent. Knight was the first-ever female superintendent selected for the county. Update: Knight still serves as superintendent today.

10 years ago * The process of tax revaluation of property in Graham County had begun with a then-value of $1.1 billion. Tax Assessor Erma Phillips said that the state required a revaluation every eight years. The county’s last review was in 2010.

10 years ago * Storms caused nearly $1.3 million in damage to roads in Graham County. The biggest repair was replacing a missing chunk of the Cherohala Skyway, which wasn’t calculated in the cost at the time.

10 years ago * Graham County reported one of the highest numbers of meth-lab busts in the region in 2012. State Attorney General Roy Cooper said that four meth labs were busted in Graham County. A total of 460 labs were busted in the state, compared with 344 in 2011 and 235 in 2010.

10 years ago * Graham County had the highest jobless rate in the state during November 2012, according to the figures available from the N.C. Department of Commerce. The department reported that Graham County had a jobless rate of 16.3 percent, compared with a 15.3 percent rate in October.

10 years ago * Graham County was close to sealing a deal with Stanley Furniture that would give the county 36 acres in Long Creek. The property was to be used for a multi-use outdoor facility according to county planner, Andy Cable. The park would be called the Young American Recreation Park.

10 years ago * Graham County’s plans were to acquire 36 acres from Stanley Furniture, to build a recreational complex – which would include a 315-seat amphitheater. The park would include multi-use fields, soccer fields, covered pavilions, exercise trails and a concession stand.
