10 years ago * The 11th Annual Cystic Fibrosis Beauty Pageant was held at Robbinsville High School, raising more than $22,000 for the foundation. The year’s theme was “Southern Belle,” as Laney Scism and Tammy Arrowood’s Star’s of Tomorrow Dance Studio trained the girls for their performances.

This Week in Local History: Sept. 7, 2023

10 years ago * A federal grand jury indicted three former Town of Robbinsville maintenance workers for dumping 4,000 gallons of sludge in Long Creek. The sludge from the town’s water plant was dumped into Long Creek by Bobby Silvers, John Carver III and Joseph Orr, according to court documents.

10 years ago * Two separate vehicle accidents on U.S. 129 South left five people injured and three critical. Reports indicated drug and alcohol were involved, as Billy Ray Underwood swerved across the center lane and hit B.J.

10 years ago * Local physician Patricia Johnson was recognized by Mission Medical Associates for being in the top 10 percent in the nation for patient approval. Only 17 positions out of 100 receive this high honor, placing Johnson in an elite field of professionals.

This Week in Local History: Aug. 10, 2023

10 years ago * Graham County Schools were facing $454,000 in budget cuts, which was $145,000 more than was anticipated. According to Superintendent Angie Knight, the cuts won’t cost the teachers their jobs, but will mean the loss of teacher assistants, supplies and textbooks.

This Week in Local History: Aug. 3, 2023

10 years ago * When Valley River Humane Society stopped picking up and receiving stray animals from Graham County, they were owed $10,000 from the county government for services rendered. County Manager Greg Cable was unaware of any funds owed to Valley River and questioned a contract.

This Week in Local History: July 27, 2023

10 years ago * Steve Hooper was the only candidate to qualify as mayor and would officially begin after the Nov. 5 general election. According to Hooper, he will serve as a full-time mayor and be in the office five days a week.
