10 years ago * Repaving of Rodney Orr Bypass was scheduled to begin, as part of a complete makeover of the main thoroughfares. The work was funded through grants from NC STEP program for rural towns.

10 years ago * Robbinsville’s new $7.4 million wastewater-treatment plant remained on schedule to open in the fall. The existing plant was 40 years old and had came close to shutdowns. The new plant would expand from 630,000 gallons of capacity to more than 800,000.

10 years ago * A project was finally taking off on Rodney Orr Bypass. The Town of Robbinsville planned to plant trees, shrubs and bulbs along with constructing several sitting areas. This “facelift” started three years prior, but was awaiting approval from the N.C. Department of Transportation.

This Week in Local History: April 6, 2023

10 years ago * John Wallace Hall of Mooresville, Tenn., lost control of his motorcycle and veered down a 90-foot embankment near Fontana Village. Hall unfortunately lost his life. State Trooper Harvey Allen hoped to get the area posted for speeds of 15 miles per hour soon.

10 years ago * Jackie Slaughter, already jailed, was faced with a new charge of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Robert Smith. The murder charge came after positive DNA was returned from the lab.

10 years ago * Angie Knight prepared to pick up the reins from then-Graham County Schools Superintendent Chip Carringer in July, and was making safety for students and staff top priority. “Chip has been a great person to learn from and has run this school with great integrity,” Knight said.
