10 years ago * A crowd enjoyed the floats in the annual Christmas parade. Sponsored by the Graham County Chamber of Commerce, the parade had 15 floats and plenty of entertainment, highlighted with visits from Santa.

10 years ago * Judy Jones, along with eight other committee members, had worked since August to bring in the spirit of Christmas to the streets of Robbinsville. Jones, former chairperson of the parade, served for three years prior, and for the annual heritage festival from 2009-12.

10 years ago * More than 400 people attended the first-ever Hometown Holiday event. One goal of the festival was to encourage shoppers to buy locally, as local businesses seemed to be the keys to the success of the event.

10 years ago * The startup of the Fontana water plant faced some delays, as the town had to reapply for the original loans and grants. The county government had changed its minds about channeling the funds for the new plant, which was the agreement in 2010.

10 years ago * In a photo finish, incumbent Graham County Commissioner Raymond Williams received 2,210 votes to 2,200 votes cast for Darrell Collins. Williams had served the county for 22 years as commissioner and got another two years as a result of the election.

10 years ago * Way out in the Pacific Ocean, the forces of history drew at least eight Graham County servicemen to the island of Iwo Jima. Robbinsville resident Doyle Brock remembered Iwo Jima like it was yesterday. “They were fanatics,” Brock said of the Japanese.

This Week in Local History: Nov. 3, 2022

10 years ago * Graham County Schools sold three parcels of land on Golf Course Road, for approximately $128,000. The 9-hole golf course had not been used in many years, containing 20 acres and a clubhouse. The original appraisal was $300,000 for four parcels of land.

10 years ago * Jam-packed crowds marked the grand opening of Bojangles’ restaurant. “We are thrilled to open the restaurant in our hometown of Robbinsville and serve residents of the local community,” said Eve Davis Whitaker, co-owner of BoCo, LLC.
