10 years ago * The twisted saga of the 2009 killing of a Graham County man, Shannon David Sawyer, took a turn with the arrest of Clifford Allen Williams. Sawyer’s body was recovered 35 feet deep in a barrel located in a sinkhole near Tellico Plains, Tenn. in 2011.

10 years ago * Janene Hardy joined the staff at The Graham Star as an advertising representative. She had lived in Graham County for 18 years and had worked at Fontana Village, where she shuttled groups across Fontana Lake as a certified U.S. Coast Guard captain.

10 years ago * A high-speed motorcycle chase on U.S. Highway 129 resulted in the arrest of 37-year-old Indiana resident Don Lee Fristsch. Sheriff’s officer Ty Gibbs was patrolling the Cheoah River when the bike passed him at a high rate of speed on a double yellow line.

10 years ago * A Robbinsville man was named a “person of interest” by the Graham County’s Sheriff’s Office in the murder of Robert Smith. Jackie Slaughter of Snowbird Road was arrested on numerous charges, but officers believe that Slaughter committed or had knowledge of Smith’s murder.

10 years ago * The winners of The Graham Star’s annual Easter Babies Contest were announced. The newspaper had 74 entries and winners were selected by drawing from a container at the office. The winning baby boy was Parker Key, 8 months old, the son of Jason Key and Sloane Millsaps.

10 years ago * Greg Cable was named the new Graham County Manager, in an unanimous vote by the board of commissioners. Cable was a candidate in 2010 for Clerk of Court, but lost to Tammy Holloway. “I am excited about this opportunity,” Cable said. “I look forward to helping the county.
