National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

March marks the 33rd Anniversary of National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. When President Ronald Reagan signed the proclamation in 1987, the estimation of the number of individuals in the U.S. with developmental disabilities was four million.

Robbinsville –  As the national ACT date approaches, schools across the country are focused on preparing for the exam. Robbinsville High School is no exception.  Juniors at the school took the test Tuesday.

Williams resigns from council

Fontana Dam – Tracy Williams’ second stint as a town council member has came to an end. During the Feb. 15 Town of Fontana Dam council meeting, it was revealed that Williams had resigned from his seat, effective immediately. The decision was amicable, as Williams cited personal issues for the move.

Conway, Corbin vying for Senate seat

Two Republican Party candidates are vying for N.C. Senate District 50 in Tuesday’s election.  The winner of this primary will run against Democratic Party candidate Victoria Fox and Libertarian candidate Clifton Ingram Jr. in the general election Tuesday, Nov. 3.

More than just a redneck

Cherokee – It has often been said that comedians get their best material from their everyday lives. Jeff Foxworthy subscribed to that very formula in 1984, and 36 years later the Hapeville, Ga., native is still creating new ways to solicit laughter from his audience.

Condo zoning variance passed

Lake Santeetlah – A 2001 brainstorm took a step in the right direction, 19 years after it was initially discussed. After a lengthy public hearing – which included a continued session from January – the Town of Lake Santeetlah voted 4-1 during its Feb.

Na Skylark coming to Brasstown

Brasstown – Na Skylark will perform a Friday Night Concert at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, N.C., 7 p.m. on Feb. 21. The show will be held in the Keith House. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
