Brown, Wachacha retain tribal council seats

Snowbird – The Snowbird/Cherokee County delegation on the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Tribal Council will remain the same for another term, following the tribal election held Thursday, Sept. 2.  Each of the six communities elects two representatives to the council.
The 2020 census revealed that Graham was the only county in “Region A” to see a population decrease over the last decade.

Population loss concerning

With 2020 Census results coming in, the main takeaway for Graham County so far is a substantial population loss.  According to the numbers released in August, the county lost 9.4 percent of its population between April 1, 2010 and April 1, 2020.

Avis Carver Pressley

Avis Carver Pressley, 62 of the Dick Branch community in Robbinsville, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Grady and Flonnie Collins Carver.

Robbinsville – Alan Walmsley has big plans for his property as he continues to add more beehives and produce more honey.

County schools shift to remote learning

Robbinsville – Starting Tuesday, Graham County students were back learning at home, following a vote of the Graham County Board of Education.  In a special called meeting Monday afternoon, the board voted 4-1 to go to virtual learning, from Tuesday until Sept.13.

Preschool reopens amid gymnasium repairs

Robbinsville – Graham County Manager Jason Marino gave an update on the Robbinsville Elementary School gymnasium at Aug. 17’s Graham County Board of Commissioners meeting. Crews have been looking closely at the gym since late spring, when structural issues with the building became apparent.

Iva Lee Beasley Turpin

Iva Lee Beasley Turpin, 86 of the Bee Cove community of Fontana Dam, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2021, at Mountain View Manor Nursing Center in Bryson City, N.C. She was a native of Graham County and the daughter of the late Joseph and Florence Gunter Beasley.

Carolyn Deyton Crisp

Carolyn Deyton Crisp, 72, of the Tuskeegee community in Robbinsville, N.C., died peacefully, Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021, at home, after a battle with liver cancer.  She was a native of Robbinsville, a graduate of Robbinsville High School and a member of Tuskeegee Baptist Church.
