10 years ago * Criminal charges against the grandmother and mother of a toddler that was mauled by a pack of pit bulls were considered by the grand jury. There was no disclosure of any charges against Susie Anderson, grandmother of the two-year-old, nor the mother, Vanessa Smith.

10 years ago * One hundred and fifty hemlocks were blasted with explosives inside the Joyce Kilmer Forest. The trees had become a safety hazard to the approximately-35,000 visitors that come to the forest each year.

10 years ago * An estimated 150 visitors gathered at Junaluska’s grave site to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Wreath Laying ceremony. The great-granddaughter of Chief Junaluska – 94-year-old Martha Taylor – was honored by the N.C. Honor Guard as they presented a flag.

10 years ago * November was proclaimed American Indian Heritage month by N.C. Governor Beverly Perdue. Several events were planned by Graham County Schools Indian Education Director Marcia Hollifield. Chief Hicks was on-hand to provide the welcome.

  10 years ago * Democrat Mickey Anderson was elected Graham County Sheriff, winning by less than 100 votes over incumbent Russell Moody. “It has been a close couple of races between us, and I appreciate the clean campaign Russell has always run,” Anderson said.

10 years ago * Graham County Board of Elections Director Susan Farley says 6,557 voters are eligible to vote in Tuesday’s general election. Farley said 785 voters have participated in one-step early voting and 122 mail-out absentees have been sent.
