10 years ago * Graham County Department of Social Services was immediately called by officers that arrived at the home of Garrell “Tick” Orr on Long Branch Road, when they found a seriously injured 3-year-old child with bruising around the facial area.

10 years ago * Jeffrey Scott Newton was suspected of robbing a bank in Florence County, S.C. Tribal officer DeWitt Chekelelee arrested Newton at the Ingles parking lot in Robbinsville, when a bright yellow sports bike caught his eye.

This Week in Local History: Sept. 10, 2020

10 years ago * A ribbon-cutting was held for the new Event Center at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and Hotel. The ribbon was cut for the new 3,000-plus seat entertainment venue by Principal Chief Mitchell Hicks. Hank Williams, Jr. inaugurated the facility with a concert.

10 years ago * A Graham County man – 36-year-old Mitchem Turpin, accused of setting fire to the sheriff’s office – was denied a motion to reduce his $260,000 bond by Criminal Court Judge Mark E. Powell on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

10 years ago * An investigation by the state’s Attorney General revealed agents at the state crime lab routinely withheld information – primarily blood evidence – from defense attorneys and aided prosecutors during a 16-year period, starting in 1987.

10 years ago * Despite efforts to save the old forest service headquarters on Massey Branch Road, the building burned to the ground on Aug. 19. Firefighters from Snowbird, Santeetlah, Robbinsville and the Graham County Rescue Squad rushed to the aid of the building that was constructed in 1962.
