Goodbye, Papa George

Robbinsville – Without George Oliver, who knows where the Robbinsville High School wrestling program would be today? Oliver – who, along with Gary Steppe, instituted the now-powerhouse Black Knights grappling team 45 years ago – passed away Aug. 5 at age 68.

Taking the good with the bad

Que Tucker’s announcement was music to athletes’ ears. After months of speculation, the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s commissioner presented during a Aug. 12 press conference a proposed sports calendar for the 2020-21 school year.

Delores Odom

Deloris H. Odom, 76 of Robbinsville, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020 at Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital in Murphy, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Jack and Ada Phillips Odom.

Robert Stone

Robert Stone, 82 of Clinton, Tenn., passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 3 in Augusta, Ga., at the Charlie Norwood VA Hospital, with family by his side.  Bob was born on Nov. 17, 1937 to Park Stone and Ada Howell in the township of Cheoah, North Carolina – modern-day Robbinsville.

George Oliver

George Langdon Oliver, 68 of the West Buffalo Community in Robbinsville, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020 at Mission Hospital in Ashville, N.C. He was born in Virginia and was the son of the late Fred and Patricia Littleton Oliver.

Ruby Crisp

Ruby Turpin Crisp, 86 of the Yellow Creek Community in Robbinsville, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 3, 2020, at her residence. A native of Graham County, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Mary Anderson Turpin.

Emma "Oma" Wilson

Emma (Oma) Moore Wilson, 92 of Robbinsville, N.C., went to her heavenly home on Thursday, July 30, 2020.   She was born in Sylvester, Ga. to Will and Fannie Moore. Oma – as she was known to most everyone – was the most loving, compassionate and giving person.

Pamela Pavelka

Pamela Ann Pavelka, 58 of Robbinsville, N.C., passed away Saturday, Aug. 1, 2020.   She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was the daughter of the late Orville and Virginia Millsaps Philpot.  She is survived by her children, Molly Pavelka and Duke Price of Andrews, N.C.

Nellie Stewart

Nellie Hedrick Stewart, 84 of the Mill Creek Circle Community of Robbinsville, N.C. went to her heavenly home, Sunday, July 26, 2020, at her residence. She was a native of Graham County and the daughter of the late Leslie and Annie Bell Millsaps Hedrick.
